Details

Sunset Manor is a Presbyterian retirement center in Jenison, Michigan. The need was for chapel furnishings which suited both the older community and the more contemporary design of the space. Of primary concern was that the furnishings represent "noble simplicity" in keeping with the Reformed tradition.

The designs were created from quartersawn white oak, a wood both noble and beautiful, in a natural finish. This approach allows the natural beauty of the wood to be fully expressed. This is enhanced by simple designs which have both visual interest in detail, and symbolic presence without excessive ornamentation.

The font holds approximately five gallons of water in a polished, stainless-steel basin. Its eight sides symbolize renewal while the legs form a cross when viewed from above. The Communion Table includes an inscription from the Gospel Account of the Last Supper, while both altar and pulpit bear a cross in the same proportions as that on the wall. The Cross is inspired by medieval gemmed crosses, but translated into wood, thus unifying the entire environment without superflous decorative elements.

The wood was carefully selected for the quality of the figure.
